Originally from England, we’ve spent 22+ years happily transplanted in the USA

Overlooking San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge we hatched a plan to take a gap year - to do what we like to do best - travel

The 6th anniversary of our gap year is winging it’s way over and there’s no sign of us calling it quits.    We’ve lived like a local across Europe and America and recently returned from a 6 month stint in Southern India, now you can now find us once again living the good life amongst the picturesque vineyards of south-west France

Call us nomads, call us mad - some have christened us posh gypsies - but most consider us to be way lucky and we couldn’t agree more

We love what we do and we’re keen to share our travel tips with you

Retired early - traveling non-stop for 6 years

We know how boomers & silver surfers like to travel

We’re traveling the world (again) enjoying retirement

Telling our boomer friends just what it’s like wherever we go

KEEP

CALM

    WE’VE

BEEN THERE

Decision made - we’re taking a belated gap year, or two.

Having bid farewell to San Francisco, California and our ex-pat life in the USA for over 22 years, our first stop was England.

Our tanks topped up with English humor, the adventure began - polishing off our last ‘Full English’ (breakfast) onboard a Virgin train to St Pancras Station, we boarded the Eurostar - next stop Calais, France - to the first and only pre-arranged appointment of our trip...

collecting a brand new lease car, before setting off on the European leg of our journey.

Yes, we have a well planed and very detailed itinerary (some habits die hard) but no, for once in our lives we do not have a time table - we plan to unmap our life and see where it takes us.

After years of endless commitments and never ending meetings, we are free, totally free.

No dashing back to the office after a couple of weeks holiday, no tagging a few days onto a business trip.

From here on out, we plan to take life at our own pace; to speed up, slow down or dash off, only when we are good and ready.

For the past ten months we have been traveling non-stop, driving through France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Croatia and England. Clocking more than twenty five thousand kilometers in the lease car and hundreds more on the folding bikes. We’ve had more adventures than Tintin, and oh yes, a few revisions to our travel plans too.

Events in the Middle East put pay to thoughts of spending the winter months traveling through Egypt, Libya and Syria, before heading into Jordan to while away another month or so and maybe venturing across to Southern India - and a terrorist bomb in Marrakech changed our plans to catch a ferry in Gibraltar and drive through Morocco for six weeks. All this can wait for another time.

Instead, we are back where we started, well, at least where we picked up the lease car.

We turned right around to spend our first meeting free winter back in France. O.K., so maybe it’s not the first place that springs to mind for a winter stop-over, but our unscheduled stay in the picturesque Dordogne region of southwestern France is working out surprisingly well.

As always, we’ve laughed a lot and learning a lot too.

Dawdling in the Dordogne, we are completely surrounded by picturesque vineyards - you could say we are plonk in the middle of the action around Bordeaux. We’ve discovered that old vine trunks burn really well on an open log fire and that vine clippings are great for adding flavor to barbecue's, and - something that we would never have thought about - hurricanes don’t just happen in Florida...

So how did we end up with a website called Boomerland Travel Tips?

An urge to give up the day job and to travel at a more leisurely pace

The idea of a long break appealed - as did thoughts of living in a new place. We reeled off a host of must see places and many more to visit again - a travel plan soon emerged

With a list of family and friends to keep in touch with - and a string of questions from friends and colleagues about our previous travels... a travel tips website followed

As for the name. There’s Disneyland, Neverland, Graceland and a host of other somewhere lands, so why can’t we - baby boomers from the generation who are said to want it all - why can’t we have Boomerland? And that was it                                                     The name Boomerland Travel Tips stuck

What we DO

OUR TRAVEL STORY ...so far

We retired early to do what we enjoy best - travel!

Our new way of life has become an addiction - turning our belated gap year into 6 years of non-stop travel.

We’re packing more into our days and less into our luggage - time is flying by and we’re loving it.

But it didn’t start out like that...

We wondered how we might fill our time, and yes, we actually did ask... are we too young to retire - are we ready for this?

In spring 2011 we bid farewell to San Francisco and set off to follow our passion - travel. Having planned the first six months we decided to see where the journey might take us after that. With no advance bookings and no return commitments, we reckoned that we had earned the right to dawdle when we felt like and speed up only when we were good and ready.

Along the way there have been so many adventures, so many interesting people, and so much that we didn’t expect - we’re fast filling camera chips and creating a shed-full of incredible memories. Our trip is turning out way better than expected, to say nothing of being addictive...the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th anniversary of our journey into the unknown beckons, and there’s no talk of unpacking our luggage or shelving our passports.

If you’re thinking about a similar adventure we encourage you to flip through our website and then... go on - do it ...

you’ve earned it too!

The original plan: Set off from California, head for family and friends in England. Pile ourselves, two heavy suite cases and two lightweight folding bicycles into a new lease car - with snazzy red tourist plates - spend 6 months driving through Europe.      All of the above - DONE.

A terrorist bomb in Marrakech changed plans to catch a ferry from Gibraltar and drive through Morocco, and the Arab Spring put pay to the idea of traveling with a guide through Libya and Syria, visiting the ancient ruins of Palymra before spending much of the winter in Israel and Jordan... maybe even India.

Instead: We lingered in France, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Croatia. With no advance accommodation we felt free to stay longer in places we enjoyed and hit the road when we ran out of reasons to stay.

Reluctantly returning the lease car, especially those snazzy red number plates, so often mistaken for diplomatic tags - we enjoyed the luxury of a police escort through many of Europe’s busy city centers.

Enjoying winter in a small French village, not far from the wine hot-spot of Saint Emilion. Surrounded by vineyard views and medieval hilltop villages, we savored a relaxed way of life - which almost made up for missing out on the heat of the Middle East.

From France we spent a few rain free months in the picturesque English Cotswolds, but when the heavens opened and the rain bucketed down, we waved goodbye to quaint cottages with soggy thatched roofs and headed back to California for some much needed sunshine. A few weeks later, we piled our luggage (and folding bikes) into our own car, and we took took off again aiming for the East Coast.

We didn’t exactly rush our trip across the USA, we stopped at anything and everything of interest, lazing at several spa’s along the way. It was 51 days before we dropped down into Florida - where we spent a few months hugging the coastline before Hurricane Isaac finally chased us out of the Sunshine State and heading back towards the California hills.

Next: Still stricken with the travel bug we updated our luggage and returned to England, enjoying a few months on a beautiful estate not far from Windsor Castle and a tempting distance from Heathrow Airport.

We no longer have our folding bicycles, or the eye catching red number plates, but we’re still geared up to travel - and when the chance to spend six months in a spanking new villa in southern India came up, we jumped at it.

Let’s go: Swapping cycles for swimsuits, it’s not just the pool we’ve plunged into - we live like locals and tour like seasoned travelers - trying everything that Southern India has to offer - and this fascinating country has plenty to share. Happily, India is just as incredible as we remember from our first visit more than 25 years ago.

Oh yes...

and we’re back to planning time in the Middle East too.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from our travels, wherever we wander...

we enjoy the day at our own pace and make the most of opportunities that come our way...

no matter how fast time flies.
